Ledger Live App – Download, Setup & Secure Crypto (Official)

Your guide to installing Ledger Live, connecting a Ledger device, and securing digital assets across desktop and mobile.

Overview

Ledger Live is the official app for managing cryptocurrencies with Ledger hardware wallets. It provides a user-friendly interface to view balances, send/receive crypto, stake supported assets, manage NFTs, and connect to dApps — while keeping private keys secure on a Ledger device. This guide covers downloading the app, initial setup, core functionality, and essential security best practices.

Download & installation

Always download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. Choose the correct installer for your platform: macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, or Android. On mobile, Ledger Live is available in the App Store and Google Play — verify the publisher is Ledger SAS to avoid impersonators.

Tip: When on desktop, check checksums or signatures if Ledger provides them to ensure installer integrity.

Initial setup

  1. Install and open Ledger Live.
  2. Choose your language and accept terms.
  3. Connect your Ledger hardware device (USB or Bluetooth for supported devices).
  4. Create a new device (set PIN and write down your recovery phrase) or restore an existing device using your 24‑word recovery phrase.

Never enter your 24‑word recovery phrase into Ledger Live or any online form. Store it offline in a secure physical location.

Adding accounts

After device setup, add accounts in Ledger Live by selecting the blockchain (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). Ledger Live will detect addresses derived from your device’s public keys. For certain blockchains, you may need to install specific apps on your Ledger device via the Manager tab.

Receiving & sending crypto

To receive funds, click "Receive" in the account and verify the address shown both in Ledger Live and on your Ledger device screen — they must match. To send funds, click "Send", input the recipient address and amount, then confirm details on the device before approving the transaction.

Staking, NFTs & dApps

Ledger Live supports staking for several networks, allowing you to earn rewards while keeping keys secure. For NFTs, Ledger Live displays supported collections and lets you manage transfers on compatible networks. To interact with decentralized applications, use WalletConnect or compatible integrations to sign transactions through your Ledger device.

Buy, swap & partner services

Integrated partners in Ledger Live offer fiat on-ramps, swaps, and other services. These are third-party providers that may require KYC and charge fees. Ledger presents partner details and rates before you proceed — review them and choose with care.

Security essentials

  • Private keys are stored in the secure element of your Ledger device and never leave the device.
  • Always verify addresses and transaction details on the device screen — this protects against malware that alters destination addresses.
  • Keep your 24‑word recovery phrase offline. Consider metal backups for durability against fire and water.
  • Only download Ledger Live from official channels and confirm URLs and TLS certificates.
  • Update Ledger Live and device firmware regularly, following the app’s guided update process.

Troubleshooting common issues

If Ledger Live doesn’t detect your device, try a different USB cable/port, ensure the device is unlocked, or toggle Bluetooth for wireless devices. For app installation or update issues, restart Ledger Live and reconnect your device. If accounts appear missing, reinstall the relevant blockchain app on the device and re-add the account.

Privacy & telemetry

Ledger Live minimizes telemetry and provides settings to control data sharing. Public addresses may be used to fetch balances — private keys are never transmitted. Review privacy options in app settings and disable telemetry if preferred.

Advanced tips

  • Export transaction histories for tax reporting using the export features in Ledger Live.
  • Use custom fee options for networks that support them to optimize cost vs. speed.
  • Consider segregating funds across multiple hardware devices for additional safety on large holdings.

Support & resources

For setup help, firmware issues, or security concerns, use Ledger’s official support portal and knowledge base. Beware of scams: Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. If you suspect compromise, move small test amounts and consult official support before performing recovery steps that involve entering your recovery phrase elsewhere.
